After Genoa, Catanzaro takes action: extraordinary inspections on the Morandi Viaduct
CATANZARO, AUG 18, 2018 – The Morandi Bridge tragedy in Genoa on August 14 has also raised alarms in the Calabria region. The regional capital, in fact, is home to the Bisantis Viaduct, often referred to as “the other Morandi Bridge,” whose maintenance over the years has been judged insufficient by several experts.
Today, drone footage reveals that the viaduct’s condition is far from optimal: superficial cracks, deformations, and signs of wear require urgent intervention to ensure the safety of citizens.
To address the situation, Mayor Sergio Abramo and the Calabria territorial coordinator of Anas, Giuseppe Ferrara, have scheduled an extraordinary meeting for Tuesday, August 21 at 10:30, which will also include technicians and managers from both organizations. The aim is to review the progress of the first phase of extraordinary maintenance, expected to be completed by the end of 2018, and plan the subsequent interventions.
Anas has planned two additional phases of work, aimed at the complete restoration of the viaduct’s supports and deck, with dedicated funding that will ensure the full recovery of the structure, the main gateway to the city’s central-northern area and a symbol of the regional capital.
During a phone conversation between Ferrara and Mayor Abramo, the Anas coordinator emphasized that surveys and load tests conducted before the start of the works yielded positive results. Abramo, who had already requested maintenance interventions two years ago, reiterated his intention to personally visit the construction site to verify the viaduct’s actual condition.
Catanzaro’s mobilization demonstrates how, just weeks after the Genoa tragedy, bridge prevention and safety have become a national priority. The drone images released today leave no doubt: immediate action is essential to prevent accidents that, this time, could be avoided.
