Hoexter, Duisburg (North Rhine-Westphalia), and Kassel (Hesse) were the target cities of a large-scale search operation that took place today, on June 29. German police are on the hunt for evidence linked to Italian organized crime, most likely the ‘Ndrangheta, according to information received by the authorities. Several buildings, including some Italian restaurants, were subject to searches. It all started last January, as stated in the police statement, when investigators discovered 145 kilograms of marijuana in an apartment in Hoexter. From there, the agents claim to have gathered evidence linking the find to the Calabrian organized crime syndicate. However, no further information regarding the investigation can be released at this time.

As part of the same operation, a 62-year-old man suspected of being involved with the ‘Ndrangheta was arrested in Munster last Tuesday. Just a few hours later, the man’s brother turned himself in to the authorities in Stuttgart.

The search operation that unfolded today represents a significant step in the fight against drug trafficking and the presence of organized crime in Germany. The ‘Ndrangheta, based in Calabria, Italy, is known to be one of the most powerful and influential criminal organizations in Europe, with a broad network involved in various illegal activities, including drug trafficking.

The discovery of the large quantity of marijuana in the Hoexter apartment served as a crucial breakthrough for investigators, leading them to uncover further connections to the ‘Ndrangheta. The involvement of Italian restaurants in the search warrants suggests the possibility of the criminal organization using these establishments as a front for illicit activities, such as money laundering or drug distribution.

German authorities have been working closely with international counterparts in recent years to combat the spread of organized crime networks, particularly those originating from Italy. The cooperation and exchange of intelligence have proven vital in tracking and dismantling these criminal networks across borders.

While today’s operation signifies a significant stride in the ongoing fight against the ‘Ndrangheta, it is just one part of a broader effort to combat organized crime in Germany and safeguard the well-being and security of its citizens. Investigations are expected to continue, and further updates regarding the case will be provided as soon as possible.
